Cancer Hospital Sylhet (CHS) is planned for Bangladesh by Rahman Medicare International UK (RMIUK). The project organisers consist of doctors, scientists and healthcare professionals from UK.
The hospital will provide total cancer care at the highest standard possible. With the 200 bed facility, Early Cancer Detection Centre (ECDC), a large out patient centre with diagnostic and review clinics. RMIUK hopes to address the cancer care deficit within the nation by having an ECDC first in Sylhet and more planned for other major cities of Bangladesh. Provisions are being made to cater for the 150 million Bangladeshi inhabitants by means of collaborative work with other institutions from within Bangladesh and abroad. According to recently published reports there are currently over 1 million people with cancer in Bangladesh, with approximately 200,000 new cases being reported annually and approximately 150,000 deaths associated with the disease. RMIUK aims to develop a modern treatment facility which will maintain a structured referral service and an accurate national cancer register similar to that of UK.
CHS is being developed with the support from the UK and Bangladeshi Governments, Leading medical equipment suppliers, Top medical Consultants from the UK, Europe and the USA, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and various UK based Cancer charities.
Dr. M Rahman The Chairman of the project says "Our research has shown that there is a need for a Cancer Hospital in the North East of the country. We hope to bring cancer care provision into one of the most densely populated regions of the nation. Over the last decade Bangladesh has undergone various developments, the influx of NGO's has heralded a change in service provisions bringing much needed expertise in terms of heath care and education into the country RMIUK aims to have similar impact on the nation as a whole by introducing the nations first Early Cancer Detection Centre".
"We are many years behind our neighbours' India in provision of care to our cancer patients, we need to work with the WHO and implement their policies adjusting to the needs of the Bangladeshi people and revitalise an outdated service." statement by Dr. R. Rahman Director of Medicine.
The hospital plans to be an all inclusive cancer care centre which will offer all forms of cancer treatment modalities including Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, and Surgery and an educational training centre of international standing. Atabur Rohman The Director of Radiation Oncology said "We will be bringing state of the art Radiotherapy equipment into the country making the CHS comparable to the West".
This project will bring much needed employment and global interest into the country, the Hospital will create around 300 jobs in house and possibly up to 1000 in the service sector.
